- Summary
- This humorous coming-of-age story about a boy Zoran is set in communist Yugoslavia. When he finds out that his great love, 12-year old Jasna, has been chosen to participate in the “Tito’s native land” march with the communist youth brigade, he enters the school contest for the best essay on Tito: the prize for which participation in the same march. His sudden obsession with Tito is cause for concern among his relatives, who all live in a small Belgrade flat using every opportunity to disagree on everything from politics to bathroom etiquette. Zoran eventually wins the contest, but the march proves to be a temptation for him. Unaccustomed to nature, long walks and independent life, harassed by the dictatorial teacher, his spirits sink and Zoran gets lost in the mountains. The ironical political and life situations he witnesses during the trip make Zoran disappointed in Jasna, the march-leaders, and, finally in Tito himself. After successfully surviving the trip he comes home a little less naïve and a little more grown-up.
