Contents Summary
Sándor Petőfi is a Hungarian poet and liberal revolutionary. He is considered Hungary's national poet, and was one of the key figures of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848. He is believed to have lost his life in the Battle of Segesvár, one of the last battles of the war.
In the late 1980s Soviet investigators found archives that revealed that after the battle at Segesvár about 1,800 Hungarian prisoners of war were marched to Siberia. Some suggest that Petőfi was one of them. In 1990, an expedition was organized to Barguzin, Siberia, where archaeologists claimed to have unearthed Petőfi's skeleton.
