- In 1992, opposition activist and writer Kanan Makiya went back to Iraq in the hope of finding documentary evidence of Saddam Hussein's human rights abuses. This documentation, containing scenes of torture and public executions, with archival footage of chemical attacks on Iraqi Kurds, was believed to have been captured by Kurdish rebel forces.
