Húsz évvel ezelőtt, 1991. november 16-án került sor a Magyar Televízió által is közvetített nyilvános vitára Kónya Imre, a legnagyobb kormánypárt, a Magyar Demokrata Fórum parlamenti frakcióvezetője, és Pető Iván, a legnagyobb ellenzéki párt, a Szabad Demokraták Szövetsége parlamenti frakcióvezetője között a kommunista diktatúra évtizedei alatt elkövetett bűnökkel kapcsolatos igazságtétel lehetőségéről. A vita óriási érdeklődést keltett, és politikai botránnyá dagadt. Aligha kétséges, hogy az esemény a mindössze két éves magyar demokrácia egyik fordulópontjának tekinthető, amely fontos hatást gyakorolt a magyarországi politikai folyamatok dinamikájára a következő két évtizedben. Húsz év után Kónya Imre és Pető Iván visszatekint. / Twenty years ago, on November 16, 1991, the Hungarian Television broadcast the debate between Imre Kónya, parliamentary faction head of the senior ruling party, the Hungarian Democratic Forum, and Iván Pető, his counterpart in the main opposition party, the Alliance of Free Democrats, on the possibility of achieving justice with regard to the crimes committed by the communist dictatorship. The debate attracted much attention and escalated into a political scandal. Without doubt, the event can be considered as a turning point in the barely two-year history of Hungarian democracy, which significantly influenced the dynamics of political processes in the country during the next two decades. The Kónya-Pető debate revisited.
