Summary:
On 24 and 25 May 1999 the Federation Commission on Missing Persons - Bosniak Side conducted a recovery operation in a neglected section of the Orthodox Christian Cemetery near Miljevići , Republika Srpska. The intent was to recover the remains of an unknown number of Bosniaks, presumably civilian, who had been killed in the area by Bosnian Serbs in 1992. The remains of 12 adults, including both males and females, were recovered from a single location within the cemetery. The disposition of the bodies, coupled with associated artifacts, indicated that this mass grave was an intrusive burial (i.e., not a proper cemetery burial) that likely dated to the recent war.
According to Federation Commission personnel, many Bosniak civilians had been killed by Bosnian Serbs in the general area in 1992. A nearby Serb military barracks had allegedly served as a detention center in 1992 and many of the detainees subsequently disappeared and are presumed dead. This cemetery site was one of many sites in the Miljevići area suspected of containing the remains of many of these missing.
