В сентябре 1982 года была образованна инициативная группа по защите верующих и УГКЦ С момента создания группу начало преследовать КГБ. Против группы развязали кампанию клеветы. Секретарь группы отец Григорий Будзинский ответил на неё Открытыми письмами-опровержениями, направленными в советские газеты.
