Summary:
Per this report, from the 5,000 refugees whom Colonel Koenigsberg encountered, between the ages of 25 and 35 and mostly in good physical condition; they were from all classes and professions - workers, intellectuals, shopkeepers, students - but all united by their hunger for freedom. They were not concerned with the sorts of freedom most often spoken about (freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and so on) they just wanted freedom. As one refugee put it: an end to the feeling that "someone was watching you through the keyhole all the time".
