Khatduhs are the youngest daughters of Khasi matrilineal clans from Meghalaya, where the lineage is from the mother, but their importance is diminishing. Economic development has fueled migration and the voices of dissent against Matriliny are becoming louder. Given the scenario 'Are They Better Off?' is an exposition of Matriliny in Meghalaya and it’s socio-political complexities, contextualized by the status of women in India generally. We are introduced to three women; Hulda Kynta, 52, Selinda Kharbuki, 29 and Jubelee Kharmujai, 23, who reveal the customs and traditions of their Khasi matrilineal society as we journey to Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, to celebrate Christmas with them. 580 Verzio Film Festival Submission 655 Documentary films 942 |2ddc |cHDD 952 |00 |10 |2ddc |40 |6FL_RECORD_4210_000000000000000 |70 |8FL |9152399FL |bFL |d2021-11-04 |l0 |oFL Record 4210 |pHU_OSA_00005934.mp4 |r2021-11-04 |w2021-11-04 |yDIGIFILM |zAccess Copy, MP4 format |cAudio Visual 920 01 xY66EDYJ 966 True |bHU_OSA_00005934 |cDigitally Anywhere / With Registration
