a| The first documentary film in a trilogy examining the aftermath of the Rwandan Genocide. It ventures into the rural heart of the African nation of Rwanda and follows the first steps in one of the world’s boldest experiments in reconciliation: the Gacaca Tribunals, which literally means "justice on the grass," a form of citizen-based justice which Rwandans decided to put into place in an attempt to deal with the crimes of the 1994 genocide. Filming for over a decade in a tiny rural hamlet, bypassing the usual interviews with politicians and international aid workers, skipping the statistics, and going directly to the emotional core of the story, talking one-on-one with survivors and accused killers alike, the filmmaker charts the impact this experiment in transitional justice has had on survivors and perpetrators alike.
