- Mihály Balog, a gypsy man from Szabolcs, works in Budapest. He gets the news here: his young wife is dead. Mihály still behaves differently than the Gypsy settlements in Koportos: he wants a beautiful, rich funeral for the woman. His three-day bitter struggle is not crowned with success: the funeral is poor, both the gypsies and the Hungarians stay away, only his wife's lovers watch the farewell from afar. The carrier robs Mihály, so he can only pay the priest by basket weaving. The late autumn twigs, collected at the risk of his life, is picked up by the Gypsies in the settlement, while Ficsur, his rival, almost beats him to death ...
