Recording of the first discussion of the series called "Transatlantic Dialogues." The series was organized in North America by the CEU New York office and in Budapest by the External Relations Office. The first discussion entitled "Split in the New Europe East and Central European Perceptions of US Foreign Policy and the Conflict with Iraq" took place on April 15, 2003 in the New York office of the Council on Foreign Relations. It focused on the recent split over US foreign policy towards Iraq which occurred between the “old” members of the European Union and the “new” member countries. Topics discussed covered foreign relations, including defense issues, legal and constitutional changes, economic challenges, and fundamental shifts in social, political and cultural structures. The chair of the panel was Donald Blinken (former US Ambassador to Hungary and former Chair of the Board of Trustees of the State University of New York). Keynote speakers were Yehuda Elkana (President and Rector of CEU) and András Simonyi (former Ambassador of the Republic of Hungary to the United States). Commentators were: Thomas Carothers (founder and director of the Democracy and the Rule of Law Project at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace) and Ivan Krastev (Director of the Center for Liberal Strategies in Bulgaria).
