The lectures included in this series were delivered in Szeged in 1983, as repetitions of similar talks given previously in Budapest. This time though, Miklós Szabó did not use his meticulously prepared, customary outlines and spoke freely about the establishment and history of the Communist movement in Hungary throughout the 20th century. He would spend time to explain the most crucial events, such as the 1956 Hungarian Revolution in more detail.
Supposing that his erudite audience was up to date with relevant textbooks published in exile and samizdat publications printed in Hungary, he would often combine references to these sources with hearsays, urban legends and leaked insiders’ information to put forward his explanations and hypotheses about the background of the most important historical-political events of the past century.
Of particular interest are the sections which analyze the Communist takeover in Hungary following the devastating closure of WWII, as well as those dealing with the 1956 uprising and the persecutions, political trials and executions in its immediate aftermath.
