Scope and Content (Narrative)

The vast majority of the files in this series have been produced in connection with Ambassador Donald Blinken's service in Hungary (1994-1997). They include correspondence with Hungarian and American politicians, military officers, leading figures in business, culture and education, Embassy staff, as well as with numerous friends; documentation of Ambassador Blinken’s nomination, confirmation, and Hungarian agrément to become US Ambassador to Hungary; documents in connection with Hungary’s accession to NATO, NATO’s Bosnian mission, and Taszár and Kecskemét airbases; documents on the process of restitution of Jewish property in Hungary; information on the ambassadorial residence in Budapest (Villa Hubay), and finally, correspondence between Ambassador Blinken and his successors as Ambassadors of the United States regarding the 2017 adoption of an amendment to the Hungarian Law on Higher Education that effectively forced out Central European University from Hungary.
