Scope and Content (Abstract)

Workers’ Councils were a special organization in the 1956 revolution, based on the Yugoslavian model of self-government rather than earlier Hungarian models of 1918 and 1945. Similarly to other local revolutionary organizations, they were the institutions of direct democracy until November 4, 1956; after the crushing of the revolution, however, with the setting up of the Central Workers’ Council of Greater Budapest a kind of dual power came into existence.

The series consists of documents related to workers’ councils in Budapest and in the countryside.

In the course of processing no documents were destroyed. Nevertheless, the collection is incomplete.
