Beszélő was founded by non-conformist liberal intellectuals in 1982. As a samizdat periodical it was written, edited, printed and distributed illegally despite the harsh oppression of the communist police. Once a banned publication, it became a popular and influential liberal and leftist political and cultural weekly after the regime change in 1990.
