The series contains issues of OMRI's biweekly printed magazine Transition: Events and Issues in the Former Soviet Union and East-Central and Southeastern Europe. The publication was launched in 1994 by the Open Media Research Institute as continuation of the RFE/RL Research Report. The first pilot issue under the title Society in Transition: News and Analysis of Developments in the Former Soviet Union and Eastern and Southeastern Europe was published in November 1994.
Besides the articles by OMRI analysts, the magazines contain short items on developments throughouot the region; excerpts from editorials, speeches, and important documents; essay book and films reviews; articles on cultural affairs; an opinion pieces by and interviews with leading government officails, political figures, opinion makers, etc.
Transition also carried periodic special issues on important topics such as the media, foreign affairs, and the social costs of transition.
