Scope and Content (Abstract)

The series covers a broad scope of political, economic, social, and cultural life in West Berlin between the years 1951 and 1979 and consists of news clippings, broadcast media and confidential reports from West Germany and Berlin.
The series contains information on crucial moments in the history of Berlin, from its division into English, Soviet, US and French occupying zones to its transformation into a divided city after the construction of Berlin Wall in 1961. The sources reflect on serious political crises, such as the physical isolation of West Berlin by the Soviet Army and the subsequent “Air Bridge" set up by the Allies in order to prevent the capitulation of the city to the Soviets. There are numerous and valuable materials from 1961, documenting East Germany’s erection of the Berlin Wall and the ensuing political crisis. The mass media of the time reflected the feelings and opinions of the West but also of the Berliners who condemned its construction. One finds press clippings on US President Kennedy’s visit and his support of the city and its citizens from the world. Other interesting material concerns the security of the city. The kidnapping of West Berliners for release in East Berlin led to an organized struggle between the occupying forces and the East German spy network. This, however, is counterposed to tragic stories of families and individuals killed on the Wall itself by GDR guards.
Facing the strong Soviet ground blockade, West Berlin authorities were compelled to organize a “normal" life for those who lived within its boundaries. There are sources on social services, on education, religion, the healthcare system and more. Many sources give a precise and detailed image of everyday life, from the food and water supply to road construction, but also of industrial production, the products themselves and their distribution. Some folders contain various brochures on industry and the economy or even on special cultural events such as Berlin festivals, etc. Very informative are the city maps of the divided city with its particular geography. After two decades of struggling for existence, Berlin began to showcase its superior taste and lifestyle which can be seen from the series of construction projects in the 60s and 70s. In a similar vein, one can also highlight sources on urban development and architecture, which has a characteristically modern and avant-guard look that has continued to develop till the present day.
