Archival history

All the photographs within this series have been transferred to Blinken OSA by Eva S. Balogh's executor shortly after Eva S. Balogh's passing in late November, 2021.

Content and Structure

Scope and Content (Abstract)

The series consists of two photo albums and 166 loose prints (BW and color), the latter organized in approximate chronological order and stored in a separate archival box.

Scope and Content (Narrative)

The 166 photographs are a documentation of Eva S. Balogh's life, from Pécs and Budapest in Hungary to Canada and to the United States.

The larger photo album is a gift presented to Eva S. Balogh by Anne K. and David G. Baker, parents of Morse College student Lynn Anne Baker, and it documents the May 1978 Commencement weekend at Yale University (Dean Balogh is pictured in several photographs).

The small album is a personal photo album of Eva S. Balogh containing photographs of herself and of her family during her childhood.

[Photo Collection of Eva S. Balogh], 1918 - 2010

The box contains prints of photos documenting Eva S. Balogh's life. The prints are organized in two sections: "Hungary (mostly before 1956)", and "Austria-Canada-US (after 1956)". The 101 prints (plus 3 duplicates) in the "Hungary" section portray Eva Balogh's ancestors including her parents, Lujza Pfeifer and Dezső Balogh; relatives and friends; (presumably) Eva Balogh's family's house in Pécs; as well as Eva Balogh's peers from kindergarten, school, and high-school. Some of these prints likely originate from the small album of pictures contained in Box No. 2 of this archival series (HU OSA 460-0-2:2). The 65 prints in the "Austria-Canada-US" section showcase Eva Balogh's personal and academic life after leaving Hungary. Of special interest are the handful of pictures showing the Weissensee (Carinthia, Austria) house, where she spent her first months of freedom waiting for her Canadian refugee visa to be issued by the Canadian Embassy in Vienna, and the picture of the airplane with which she first landed at Montréal Airport in February, 1957.

[Photo Album With Family Photographs], 1940

According to the note written on its back cover, this small-size (22.5 x 14 x 2.5 cm) photo album containing 68 family photographs is a gift to Eva Balogh from Tini, Eva Balogh's godmother. The note is dated December 6, 1940. A number of photographs appear to be missing from the album (some of these are likely found among the prints in Box No. 1 of this archival series, HU OSA 460-0-2:1). Most of the photos in this album portray Eva Balogh as a small child, her parents, and other small children, presumably from her extended family. At least some of the pictures appear to be taken in Pécs, Hungary.

[Photo Album Presented to Eva S. Balogh by Anne K. and David G. Baker], 1975 - 1978

This large-size (30 x 29 x 7 cm) photo album is a gift presented to Eva S. Balogh by the parents of Lynn A. Baker, 1978 graduate of Morse Residential College at Yale University, where Eva S. Balogh was Dean from 1973 to 1978. The album contains 81 color photographs with captions, and an album contents list. Two photographs titled "Dean leading procession" and "Procession to Baccalaurate 8x10 [inches in size]") appear to have been removed from the album). The vast majority of pictures were taken during the May 1978 graduation weekend, while a small number of photographs portrays Lynn Baker and Eva Balogh on other (earlier) occasions; the Morse graduation exercises of 1976; and Morse Parents' Day in 1975.  At the back of the album, paper pockets contain one copy of the Yale University Baccalaurate Address of May 21, 1978; the program of the Commencement Concert (same date); the program of the 277th Commencement ceremony (May 22, 1978), as well as one copy of The New Journal (Volume 11, No. 4), a "valuable alternative magazine in Yale College".
