Civil defense exercise in Békés County Békési gyakorlat In 1984 Békés County staged a comprehensive civil defense exercise, which was attended by delegates from other socialist countries. The objective of the exercise was to prepare the public for armed aggression by a foreign power. The participants studied the most effective ways of conducting the planning and execution of coordinated response at county level. The most important criteria of the exercise were efficiency and wartime application. The culmination of the event was the simulated evacuation of the town of Sarkad. When the aggressors follow up such an attack with a chemical strike, they may succeed in hindering the rescue operation by shutting down the access routes. In such a scenario, the rescue workers need to open safe access routes through the contaminated area, which will also serve as escape routes for the civilian population. "Operation Velence" - civil defense exercise in Fejér County A “Velence hadművelet” - Fejér megyei polgári védelmi nagygyakorlat The film was shot during a civil defense exercise held in Fejér County. It explains why it makes sense to prepare ourselves for wartime conditions. While the western powers keep talking about the politics of peace, they spend untold sums of money on armaments. The thirty-eight thousand civilians who took part in the exercise were able to learn how to overcome critical situations caused by environmental catastrophes or military strikes, provided that the necessary technological background is available. They found out what to pack into their suitcase in case of an evacuation and how to conduct themselves in such circumstances, and also discovered how the medical services, the food supply system and the decontamination procedures work.
