Scope and Content (Abstract)

The Foundation issued invitations, paid expenses and on request made arrangements with universities and other centers to be visited in Western Europe for people who had been recommended to the Foundation through a network of associates in Eastern Europe, or through individuals in the West who knew the candidates concerned. According to FEIE`s own presentation, this operation filled an important gap, both conceptually and in practice, in a period of détente, when transnational mobility encompassed either the radicalized dissidence or the category of politically loyal persons who were allowed to travel, also in the light of the provisions of the European Security Conference.

The series consists of applications and correspondence between FEIE and applicants or grantees.

System of arrangement

The series reflects the original order of the documents created by the originator. In the first part of the series contains files documenting activities concerning East Europe chronologically from between 1966 and 1974. The rest of the series contains lists of grantees, applications and correspondence in a chronologic fashion.
