Scope and Content (Abstract)

The series contains various reference materials that Alfred A. Reisch collected and used for his research purposes.

The first part of the series, Book Research Materials, covers a wide range of research materials that Alfred A. Reisch found in support of the chapters of his book, Hot Books in the Cold War. These are supplemented by the archival materials, which were presented in the previous series. The first part of the series also includes materials by other scholars, journalists or program participants that are relevant to the book program, along with research on biographies of book distributors and contributors to the émigré publications. There are also research materials for the Baltic Countries Book Program, a subject on which he was planning to work next for another book.

Within Other Research Topics, of special interest for researchers are materials that cover the history of the radio, with a detailed description on how the materials for radio transmission were collected. In this section, there are materials detailing the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)'s involvement in the earlier years of radio existence and print-outs from the Richard Cumming’s Blog on the History of the Cold War (2010 to present), which include reflections from radio veterans, biographies of important radio personalities, death notices, etc.

Additionally, there are reference materials that Alfred A. Reisch collected while teaching at the Georgetown University Continuing Education Extension program in the ‘70s and materials on North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), NATO Enlargement topics, and US and European Security that relate to his 25-years involvement with NATO School.

Collected reference materials on European diplomatic history, foreign policy of the European Powers, history and development of the European Union, European security and integration, US and European security, US Foreign Policy in Eastern Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean mainly relate to his activities as a visiting Professor of Diplomatic History at the University of Economics at Izmir University.

The reference materials of research on different foundations were collected in relation to his search for materials for his book.

Also, the series includes materials from different conferences pertaining to Radio Free Europe (RFE) topics, which recognize the RFE contribution as “an insider voice from outside” and a “meditator of knowledge for almost 40 years”. In addition, there is a collection of papers Alfred A. Reisch presented at conferences on his subjects of interest, such as Eastern European writer as political actor, relations between Eastern Europe and United States, reflections on the failure of Socialism in Easter Europe, the legacy of 1956, the future of the military in post-Communist era.

Some of the materials were organized thematically and some were loose papers. Thematical organization is used to reflect Alfred A. Reisch`s major research interests and materials are arranged as: Book Research Materials, Other Research Topics, Research by Countries, Research by Genre, and then alphabetically. Materials are organized thematically and then alphabetically.
