Context

Archival history: The series was not originally a part of the HU OSA 300-55 subfonds. It was stored in separate containers and possibly belonged to an indiividual (unknown) RFE analyst. OSA archivists decided to add this series to the HU 300-55 subfonds based on two criteria: (1) it uses Polish samizdat sources extensively and (2) focuses on the independent political life, documenting mainly the legal abuses directed against the political opposition.

Content and Structure

Scope and Content (Abstract): TThe series contains subject files collected by an unknown RFE analyst.

The files are based on both underground and official publications (including the foreign press) – clippings of journal articles, xerox copies of books, RFE-produced materials (A-wires, B-wires, situation reports and background reports). The special focus of the series is on legal matters related to independent political activities and state repression thereof, including entries on: provisional custody, legal banishment, employment bans, capital banishment, misdemeanor courts, the penitentiary system and penal policy.

The series also documents some of the most famous political trials as well as cases of state harassment and repression against pro-Solidarity priests.
