The 25 photos in the exhibition were taken and selected especially for the East-European Goethe Institutes by Barbara Klemm, one of the most important documentary photographers of the German student movements. Klemm covered East- and West-German political and social events as a photographer for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. Over the years she has received various awards as a result of her outstanding work and in recognition of her direct and original photos.




After the opening of the photo exhibition Paul Hockenos and Gábor Klaniczay have discussed the events and signifficance of year 1968.

Archival history

Paul Hockenos is a writer and political analyst. He lives in Berlin and in New York and concentrates mainly on Germany and South-Eastern Europe. His most recent book in 2008 was "Joschka Fischer and the Making of the Berlin Republic: An Alternative History of Postwar Germany" (Oxford University Press, 2008) Gábor Klaniczay is a historian, a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Rector of the Collegium Budapest, and professor and head of the Medieval Department at the Central European University (in 2008). He experienced the 1968 student revolts at first hand in Paris; since then he has been deeply engaged with the relationship between culture and counter-culture. His book "Counter Culture in the 70s and 80s" was published at Noran in 2003. Paris, New York, Cairo, Berlin... In 1968 simultaneous demonstrations in favour of democracy were held throughout the world. 40 years later well-known authors from all corners of the globe look back at the events of that year: have the revolts left any trace?
