On the occasion of the tercentenary of Linnaeus’s birth, OSA Archivum, in collaboration with the Budapest Zoo, organized an exhibition on the relationship between classification/taxonomy and the archive.
The show presented three layers of the archive and the corresponding system/logic of classification.
The first – three dimensional – part of the exhibition presented a collection of plants (and animals, mostly insects and birds), brought over from the Zoo. The Zoo has been consciously collecting plants from different parts of the world. OSA was interested mostly in tropical plants. OSA regarded the collection of the Zoo as an archive, and exhibited selected sub-sets of that archive within Galeria Centralis. The plants, a collection of physical objects, were organized at OSA into a collection, showing certain classification principles behind the arrangement.
This first order of the exhibition included proper archival materials as well, to connect the exhibition space with the archival repository, with the help of web cameras.
The living organism and the archival artifacts too were properly classified: named (using the Linnean binomial system) and referenced (using archival references). The Linnean designation lead to the next layer of the exhibition.
2. The second – two dimensional – part of the show concentrated on Linnaeus' work, his taxonomic system, and the nature, the logic and the problems of both the Linnaean taxonomy, and classification in general. This second order of the exhibit presented herbaria, type specimen, illustrations, engravings, photographs, and catalogs. Whenever possible, finding aids, card catalogs referred to objects shown in the first part of the exhibition.
The second part of the show intended to be both concrete and abstract. The intention was to present objects related Linnaeus's life and work, (artifacts catalogs, herbaria, periodic tables from museum collections) but also to explain the issues of classification in general.
3. The third – virtual – part of the exhibit dealt with third order collections and classificatory systems: digital collections, digital catalogs, collaborative classification projects. The third part dealt with the new ways/logic of organizing collections, information, knowledge, taxonomic projects.
The aim was to show digital collections, like the Human Genome Project, or digital reworking of the Linnaean taxonomy such as the Global Taxonomy Initiative, The Barcode of Life Initiative, the Encyclopedia of Life, the Taxonomic Databases Working Group, and the Tree of Life Web Project.
This part of the show reconnected the biological theme to the proper archival thematic. The third order included new archival and library classification projects such as the Online Computer Library Center that manages the Dewey Decimal system; the ISBN.nu; the aura (Advanced User Resource Annotation) Project; Thinglink; and not least the Institute of Record, a work in progress of OSA that aims at establishing a distributed collaborative digital historical archive.
A documentary film program, presented in conjunction with the exhibition “Archives of the Living and the Dead” was organized to elaborate ont he issues of botany, taxonomy, classification, information management and archives. Film screenings and follow-up discussions took place every Thursday from February 14 through March 13, 2008.

Linnaeus születésének harmadszázadik évfordulója alkalmából az OSA Archivum a Fővárosi Állatkerttel együttműködve kiállítást szervezett az osztályozás/takszonómia és az archívum kapcsolatáról.
A kiállítás az archívum három szintjét és az azoknak megfelelő osztályozási rendszert/logikát mutatták be.
Az első, háromdimenziós rész egy, az Állatkertből áthozott növénygyűjteményt (és állatokat, főként madarakat) mutat be. Az Állatkert szisztematikusan gyűjt növényeket a világ minden tájáról. Az OSÁ-t elsősorban a trópusi növények érdeklik, és egyéni gyűjtőknek is segít, helyet biztosítva azoknak a növényeiknek, amelyek kinőtték egy magánlakás kereteit. Az Állatkert növénygyűjteményéből/archívumából véletlenszerűen kiválasztott részhalmazt – mint valóságos archívumot – állítottuk ki az OSA Archivumban. A növényeket – fizikai tárgyak kollekcióját –, az állatkerti rendszerezéshez hasonlóan az OSA is gyűjteménybe rendezte, miközben a rendszer mögötti osztályozási elveket is láthatóvá tette. Az installáció fizikai tárgyak, azok egymáshoz való térbeli viszonyának, illetve a mögötte meghúzódó összefüggéseknek archívuma lesz. A kiállítás első rendje valódi archívumi anyagokat is magában foglal, a kiállítótermet webkamerák kötötték össze az OSA raktáraival.
Az élőlények és az archívumi anyagok is megfelelő jelzetet, (a linnéi binomiális nómenklatúra szerinti) nevet és (a levéltári hivatkozási szabályok szerinti) hivatkozást kaptak. A linnéi rendszer vezette át a látogatót a következő szintre.
A második, kétdimenziós rész Linné munkásságára, taxonómiai rendszerére, az osztályozás jellegére, logikájára és problémáira koncentrált.
Ebben a részben herbáriumok, mintapéldányok, illusztrációk, metszeteket és katalógusok voltak kiállítva. A herbáriumokat és mintapéldányokat két minőségükben, mint fizikai tárgyakat, gyűjteményeket, illetve mint az első szinten felvonultatott tárgyakról szóló információk hordozóit mutattuk be.
A kiállítás második rendje egyszerre kézzelfogható és elvont. Linné életéhez és munkásságához kapcsolódó tárgyakat mutatott be az OSA (múzeumi gyűjteményekből származó tárgykatalógusokat, herbáriumokat, periódusos táblázatokat), de egyúttal az osztályozással általában felmerülő kérdéseket és elméleti problémákat is taglalt.
A kiállítás harmadik, virtuális része a gyűjtemények és osztályozási rendszerek harmadik rendjével foglalkozott: digitális gyűjteményekkel és katalógusokkal, kollaboratív osztályozási rendszerekkel, amelyek középpontjában az információ, gyűjtemények, tudás, taxonómiai projektek új rendszerezési elve/logikája állt. Hangsúlyos a különféle digitális gyűjtemények bemutatása, mint például a Human Genome Project, vagy a linnéi taxonómia digitális újrafeldolgozásával kapcsolatos kezdeményezések, így a Global Taxonomy Initiative, a The Barcode of Life Initiative, a Taxonomic Databases Working Group, vagy a Tree of Life web project.
A kiállításnak ezen pontján a biológiai szál ismét összekapcsolódott az archívumi szállal. A harmadik rend így új könyvtári klasszifikációs projekteket mutatott be, mint pl. az Online Computer Library Center, amely a Dewey tizedes osztályozási rendszert kezeli, az ISBN.nu, az aura (Advanced User Resource Annotation) projekt, a Thinglink, és nem utolsósorban az Institute of Record, az OSA Archivum folyamatban levő munkája, amelynek célja egy kollaboratív, digitális, történeti iratmegosztó archívum létrehozása.
A kiállítást dokumentumfilmes program kísérte: a botanika, a rendszertan, az osztályozás, az információkezelés és az archívumok kérdéseit taglaltuk. A filmvetítésekre és az azt követő beszélgetésekre 2008. február 14-től március 13-ig csütörtökönként került sor.
